I Hear A Story

“Are you alright?” Sempervirens asks. I shake my head.

“Go on,” I squeak out, “Continue.”

I cast another glance at Sky and Synne. They are fine. Sempervirens shakes green vines out of her face and continues.

“The powerful savage king is slated to arrive on the Antarean homeworld to meet his clansmen, what will happen next?”

“That’s it.”

“I am afraid so. If you enjoyed the story, you may tip.”

I have a feeling her suggestion about tipping isn’t optional. I tap my finger to her pad and thank her. Leofric is alive and if he’ll be on the Antarean homeworld, perhaps I can get a message to him. I get Synne and Sky and usher them home early. I call up the sitter, who eagerly agrees and I rush to Dr. Z’dan. I tell her about the story and she promises to look into it.

“Zubon intelligence sometimes moves more slowly than the Aquarians because they can tap into the trees neural network.”

She might as well have been speaking Greek to me. I nod as if I understand and leave her to her work. When I return home, Sky uses a wooden dowel to practice sword fighting with the graceful Zubon sitter. She is agile for her size and she jabs him quickly.

A fight between her and an Antarean of similar age would be admirable. She stops the fight once I walk in. Synne gurgles from her crib.

“Did you have good news, miss?”

“Good enough.”

I pay her and she leaves. Later in the evening, Z’dan stops by after her shift and explains that she found Leofric. He is on their home planet, but there is a war and communications struggle to get in.

“Carrying children, you are exempt from Antarean battle. You could take a ship into their space.”

“How? I don’t know how to fly one.”

“It will only take you a few months to save the money with your career.”

“Months?!”

“500,000 credits. You can get a Zubon crew for that price. It is a discount, but I can arrange it. I have become… fond of you my dear.”

She smiles and I know she sees me as young as even a great-granddaughter. It has always felt rude to ask the good doctor’s age but I can see it when she smiles and fine lines crack into the silver skin around her eyes.

“Will I be able to send him a message?”

“You can try.”

She shows me how to apply for communication into Antarean space. The process is a glimpse untrustworthy. I put the children to sleep and try to send something.

Leofric,

I know you are alive. So am I.

I have our daughter, Synne and a son. Sky.

He is not ours. You may believe I am dead but please…

Once you receive this message. Respond.

Coco

I cannot possibly say more than that. I can’t put the depth of my love and loss into a simple note for him. Doing so would simply prove too difficult.

I fall asleep next to Sky and wonder if I can convince him to sleep in his own bed soon.
